The Waitomo Caves aren’t the only attraction in the area – above ground, there’s plenty more to discover. Take a walk through some of the nearby scenic reserves and explore more weird and wonderful landscapes, go on a horse trek, or find out more about the caves and their history. Waitomo Glowworms Visitor Centre & Discovery Centre
Waitomo Glowworm Visitor Centre: This newly refurbished award-winning venue will enhance your experience of the caves. See a short film about the region, its people and their history or visit the latest exhibition.
Waitomo Discovery Centre: Located a short distance from the entrance to the caves, this Centre contains an i-SITE with information on the area. Visit the spelological museum and learn about the history of caving in New Zealand and the creatures that live there, see fossils and skeletons of the giant moa, learn more about glowworms and enjoy a range of interactive activities.

Walks and Treks
Explore Waitomo’s diverse landscape with a range of walking tracks. See fantastic limestone formations, undulating rivers, native bush and gushing waterfalls, all within a short distance of Waitomo Caves.
Waitomo Walkway: Starting opposite the Discovery Centre, travel along the Waitomo River through native bush, caves and over a spectacular limestone bridge to the Ruakuri Scenic Reserve. Approximately 2 hours return.
Ruakuri Scenic Reserve: Take a walk through this historically significant area for spectacular views of rocky outcrops, native forest and caves, and follow the loop track through a natural tunnel. Approximately 30 minutes return.
Mangapohue Natural Bridge: This stunning 17 metre-high limestone arch is the last remnant of an ancient cave system. The bridge spans the Mangapohue Stream about 25 kilometres west of Waitomo. Approximately 25 minutes return.
Marokopa Falls: This powerfully beautiful 35-metre high waterfall is situated in a huge natural amphitheatre. Take a 10-minute walk to view it from down river, or follow the 30-minute track to a viewing platform and see, hear and feel the falls up close.

Take a horse trek through picturesque scenery, get a humorous look at New Zealand rural life at Woodlyn Park’s Kiwi culture show, visit Altura Gardens and Wildlife park and pet the animals, or even experience angora rabbit shearing at Roselands Farm park.
